There are so many ‘Search Number’ Tools available these days it can be hard to know which are the useful and relevant numbers. They need to be analyzed as you suggest.

Informative post, many people make a poor keyword selection and wonder why they are not making money. As you say both tools should be used for finding short and long tail keywords.
Valuable tip about grouping keywords for buyer and information.
